Description

Scientific Name: Hysterocrates laticeps

Common Names: Nigerian Rust Leg Tarantula | Nigerian Brown

Another lovely baboon spider in the Hysterocrates genus. The Nigerian Rust Leg is sometimes confused with the Cameroon Red Baboon as they can look similar at different stages of growth and sadly, some hobbyists have cross bred Hysterocrates gigas with Hysterocrates laticeps by mistake. However, they are quite different and their appearance is easy to tell apart if you look closely (see video below). But essentially they are another big brown fossorial baboon spider with all the habits that we know and love from old world species.

We are unsure if Hysterocrates laticeps is capable of stridulating their fangs (hissing) or if they can swim like Hystrocrates gigas, but we do know that Hysterocrates laticeps can be kept communally with mom for quite some time. We don’t have any info or reports from hobbyists trying communal setups all the way up to adult stage, but as you will see in the video below, there are definitely some large communal tendencies with this species.
